Our Review:

Peter Saints is a 17 year old boy.  His parents were both killed (protecting him) when he was very young.  He is currently living in an orphanage outside of Washington, D.C. run by Pastor Flinn.  Pastor Flinn has become Peter’s father figure.  All of the children at the orphanage are home schooled and never leave the compound…well, all except for Peter.  He is the resident Robin Hood of the orphanage.  He is the good big brother to the younger kids and he takes care of bullies and puts the newcomers in their place.

Peter is also a typical rebellious boy and sneaks out of the orphanage on a regular bases and heads into town to hit up night clubs and partake in what most people would call a relatively normal social life of a teenage boy.  However, one night everything changes.  Peter runs into Hannah, a homeless girl living on the streets of DC.  On a previous trip, Peter gives her a large amount of money to help her out and in the her eyes, becomes a great “friend”.  On this evening she runs into him just before sneaking his way into a night club and ruins his chances of entry.  He tries to run from her and darts into traffic only to hear and see her being stuck by a car that runs off.  Peter runs back to get her, but she’s is past the point of help.  He scoops her up and takes her to a nearby empty house, he tried to comfort her and asks  her why she followed him.  Her response,  “To give you this…my gift.”  She proceeds to draw a symbol (in her own blood) on Peter’s palm.  We quickly learn this orphanage is to protect the children of the members of THE ORDER and Pastor Flinn has been teaching them more than reading, writing and arithmetic, he has been teaching them how to survive.

From the first page, this book had us hooked.  We were immediately drawn into the life of Peter Saints.  This book is filled with action, adventure, mystery, murder and general mayhem.  LM Preston’s storytelling abilities are wonderful.  The chapters/scenes were so realistic that we felt like we were with Peter all along the way.  We had a hard time putting this book down once we started.  While we had a general idea where the story line was headed, there were so many twists and turns that we couldn’t have predicted the details, characters or imagination it took to get to the last page.

If a second book is in the works, it will make it to the top of our To Be Read list!
